Multiple Choice

Multiple Choice

Definition

In multiple choice tasks, there is a question followed by three possible answers, or the beginning of a sentence followed by three possible ways to complete the sentence. Test takers are required to choose the one correct answer: A, B or C.

Sometimes, test takers are given a longer list of possible answers and told that they have to choose more than one. In this case, they should read the question carefully to check how many answers are required.

Task focus: Multiple choice questions are used to test a wide range of skills. The test taker may be required to have a detailed understanding of specific points or an overall understanding of the main points of the listening text.

The Strategy

Before you listenWhile you listenAfter you listen

1. Read the instructions to see how many options to choose.

2. Read the question(s) or sentence prompt(s) and options. Then underline the key words. This will give you an idea of what the recording will be about and what to listen for.

1. Listen for a signal word from the question/stem that will signal the answer is coming. Listen for synonyms or paraphrases of the key words you underline in the answers.

2. Choose the best option when you have found the answer.

1. Check your answer although you do not click the wrong option.

KeyTips

  • Do not choose an option just because you heard it. Listen carefully to the whole audio, since there are a lot of distractors.
  • Be aware that the audio will be full of paraphrasing.
